A mission

To-day I was on a mission to deliver posters and invites around Canterbury. So I started At
the Sydney Cooper Gallery which to my surprise was closed, so I knocked on the window and gave a card to a secretary. Then on to Chromos who took a poster, and round the corner to the whole food shop. I pegged one up in the downstairs cafe at Marks & Spencer. I left one at the Stark Gallery and so on. It was rather wet and windy.

A nice pale grey

We have tidied up the studio and have painted the floor a nice pale grey. Most of the work in the upper studio has been hung. This took quite a while as different arrangements were tried out
in different ways. The floor paint ran out in the downstairs studio . I managed to get my drawings back from the framer in time and they are now on the wall. This weekend I have been concentrating on my files and evaluation which is taking some time but I am nearing the end of my labours.

More painting the wall but all is well

Today more painting the walls with the added interest of putting letters in envelopes. We also had a brief meeting with our tutor to catch up on any new developments. We have nearly all finnished our business cards and some people have posted images on their bloggs. Kati is going to arrange the artists statements using the press release comments. All seems to be well and all is well.

Business card dilemma

I have been working upon my business card and decided upon using three images. One of which is at the top of this page( the girl with glasses ) and the other at the bottom showing people at a bus stop in the early 1950's. I am pleased to say they are no longer waiting! I used publisher and made them the standard size. I chose three images eventually because it was difficult to decide upon one.

Snowy White and Artic

Today we painted the studio walls in preparation for the show, two coats and lots of filling and
climbing up and down on chairs. It looks like a different place, snowy white and Artic.
I have been thinking about framing the large oil painting and I may have to go in search of wood in order to do this, I have measured up and talked to a carpenter about this daunting task.
Tomorrow will be another painting day and on Friday I collect my drawings from the framers.

Scrutinizing the frames and going to Brighton

Last Wednesday we had a meeting with the BA group to finalise one or two things. We agreed on the wine and food issue and are keeping things simple. Hopefully help will be on hand from the assistance of first year students who will serve drinks at the event. We send out invites soon and on Monday we have to start to paint the studio in traditional colours of grey and white.
Saturday found me at the Gerhard Richter Portraits exhibition where I scrutinized the frames and presentation to the best of my ability. I made jottings in the little pamphlet about appearance and size. I also noted those paintings with no frame at all ,and those that are framed once and the placed in another glass fronted frame for good measure. I looked at the edges of some of the unframed ones and noted if they were painted clean or left as they were, a very instructive visit.
Today we intended to go down to Brighton to look into some galleries , but this did not happen because it was the 50Th anniversary of the the Mini motor car and a huge rally was held in their honour in Brighton. An amazing cavalcade of little cars of every colour, age and modification was heading down the motor way in the same direction. So we decided to go to Hove instead ,and then on to a barbecue at an acquaintance's house, but it rained so we stayed inside for Pims and ginger ale

Framing experience

Today I went down to Hawkeswell's the framers. My mission was to take two large
drawings to be framed in a simple fashion. They are to have plain grey wood frames and mirror plates. This will cost me £70 pounds for two. I collect them on the 22nd May. Next week we are painting the studios and making the areas look neat and calm. The Private View is on Wednesday
3rd June. This should be fun although it is causing intense debate about the finer details such as
olives and pineapples. We have each to come up with an invite list, unfortunately I do not Know as many people in Canterbury as I do in West Yorkshire and Walthamstow E17. But I will Try my best.

Another meeting

The last meeting was on WWednesday April 22nd with the BA group . We decided to have two separate invites and separate posters which will make the two groups happy. That's that. The private view food is still being discussed, but I think it will be something simple as the alternative is too complicated and riddled with difficulties. We are to have the work exhibited in Godwin studios which are to be tidied up for the event.

Roles

The Group have all been assigned various roles in the run up to the end of year exhibition.
We seem to have similar roles as last time and I am joint co-ordinator along with Karen Baxter.
This means I arrange the meetings and draw up an agenda.I also have to liaise with staff and other students if an urgent matter arises. At the moment we are all thinking about designing business cards and invites. More later.

Meeting

April 8th meeting went as follows.
We talked about Katie and Fai's designs for the poster with three members from the BA group.
This issue still remains unresolved at the moment, but the BA group want to come up with their own design and we all agreed it would be a good idea. There was some discussion about the private view and the type /price of food to be considered suitable. This is still an on going issue to be investigated by Nathan and Jake who will hopefully come up with a satisfactory solution. The full minutes were taken by Lynsey and are on the group blog named "Dogs". The Next meeting is due on Tuesday 21st. Be prepared.

Private view invite

Last Friday(April 3rd) I went into college to help Fai and Kati with the design of the private view invite and poster. We have been urged to do this as time is dwindling. Kati , who has a very good camera with lots of features, took a shot of a studio chair with a glass of"wine" on the seat.Once in "photoshop" it was manipulated satisfactorily and Fai added text and moved it around a bit, etc.
Meanwhile I went up stairs to liaise with two BA students( the majority being in Amsterdam)
with a satisfactory outcome. All is well and I think the design thought up by Kati and Fai and admired by me, is going to be acceptable to the group. We have another meeting tomorrow about the design(April8th).

Meeting with the BA group

To day we had a meeting with the B A group about how we are going to manage the End of Year Show. We agreed a lot of things need to be thought about before final arngements can be made.
We have to come up with a guest list so we can quickly send out the invites. The invites also have to be designed to everyones general satisfaction. The HND 2 meeting will be next Tuesday.I have to collate an agenda for this.

I am not eating any chocolate of any description.
My work is still on track and I have painted some more small canvases and I am in
the middle of completing a drawing of factory workers. This is inspired by a small
black and white photograph taken in April 1948.

Sunday, 1 March 2009

It is now the beginning of Lent and for the next forty days I will not be eating chocolate or crisps
except if there is nothing else to eat. I have just made some notes for my Gerhard Richter essay and tomorrow I am off to do a work experience day at Kent University.

January 27th

So far I have completed a series of small paintings based upon photographs from a family album.
They are in inks and various other materials such as acrylics and felt tip pens. The figures in the photographs especially interest me as they evoke a past era. They are mainly black and white snapshots from the 1940's and 50's. Sometimes the quality of the photograph is hazy or dis coloured, but I think this adds to the interest and historical value. In the future I intend to work upon larger paintings and mono-prints all based upon photographs.
